ABOUT ME

Houston, Tx, United States
Hi. Welcome to my site; my name is Karen. I'm an avid scrap-booker, card-maker, and paper-crafter. I have been scrapbooking for about 12 years and I am just as excited now as when I first started. Scrapbooking is the instrument I use to record some of the greatest and most special moments of my family’s life. I love buying patterned paper, ribbon and embellishments, taking pictures of my son, teaching scrapbooking and hosting workshops. This hobby continues to be an obsession for me and it continues to challenge me to be a better scrapper. I love the escape that scrapbooking affords me and the fun it has brought into my world. I have one child, a son; he's 15 years old and he is my favorite scrapbook subject. I hope that you enjoyed my site and will visit again soon.

Thinking of You

I know it's been a while since I've posted anything, but I decided to take a class this semester and it has occupied a good bit of time these last four months. I have taken the final exam and passed, now on to studying for the national certification exam. I will try to sneak some scrapbooking in, when I can.

Now that I've caught you up, here's a card I made for my girlfriend. She was going through some medical challenges and we were talking, praying and hoping that everything would be okay. I'm glad to report that it wasn't cancer, and the surgery was successful.

Layouts for a Class

I love teaching scrapbooking and I generally like to do 4 layouts, a few cards and a paper crafting item in each class. Here are the layouts for a class I taught.

Enjoy

Pocket Invitation Tag

Need a baby shower invitation in brown and pink, with dragonflies and lady bugs; that was a request from one of my friends. The lady bugs through me for a loop because I couldn't see a red and black lady bug on a pink and brown invitation. As you can see, I stuck with the dragon fly.

Christmas is Coming

I had to prepare a couple of Christmas layouts to teach for Sunday Night Live at the store, where I'm on the design team. I had a great time making this layout and it was fun to look back at some old Christmas pictures; where did the time go.

My Strong Handsome Little Man

Here he is, "My Strong Handsome Little Man". This layout will be featured as the Layout of The Week next week at By Design Scrapbook Boutique, where I'm a design team member. The papers are wonderful and the embellishments were so much fun to work with.

Enjoy.

Newport Buddies

Josh and I vacationed this summer in Newport Beach with friends. The boys had a wonderful time, the adults did too; we were just exhausted when we got back. One of these days we'll take a relaxing vacation, but for now, there is too much to see and do and Josh is always determined to see and do it all.

Fall Cards

I picked up some beautiful fall papers at the store and went home to play. I used the paper for cards and layouts. The cards weren't for any special occasion; just wanted to play with my new paper. Take a look. I hope you enjoy.

Love this paper

Have you ever come across patterned paper and just feel in love with it? Well I did it with a new line from, Graphic 45. I saw the paper and thought, I have to create some layouts using the whole line, so I did. My son is the handsome gentlemen in these photographs.

Birthday #43

I made this card for my girlfriend's 43rd birthday. The card doesn't have a sentiment on the outside because it was too pretty for that. I told my girlfriend, you know what we're celebrating, so remember that when you look at your card. You can't tell from the pictures, but the brown designs on the paper are felt. When I saw the paper in the store, I immediately thought of the card I had to make for my scrappin partner in crime. It's not about the sentiment, it's all about the card design.

I was having such a good time with the card, that I decided to make a matching envelope and gift card box. Ooooh pretty.

October birthday

Wonderful October, the beginning of Fall and my favorite season of the year. Certain seasons bring about certain feelings. For me Fall is a cozy time, a time for turtleneck sweaters and good gumbo. It's also a time for beautiful shades of brown and pink. When I sat down to make an October birthday card, the weather was perfect, starting to cool down from the summer heat, and I was in a cozy mood. I had the perfect sheet of brown, pink and white patterned paper and I wanted to play up the colors. This was my creation.

Scrapbooking after Ike - Scrap Pink

Hi:

It's been a while since I've posted to my blog. My son and I were in a mandatory evacuation zip code for Hurricane Ike, so we packed up and went to my sister's house. We were there for a week because we had no electricity at our house. When we returned home, I immediately began preparing for Scrap Pink weekend at my LSS, By Design Scrapbook Boutique. I was very honored to be asked to participate in the weekend by designing a card and teaching during the Friday night session.

This is the card I designed.

Men of God

The pictures in these two layouts are very special to me because these pictures remind me that my 12 year old son is becoming a man. Josh wanted to participate in the Men's Day Celebration this year and offered to spend his own money to purchase the tie and handkerchief set that all of the men wear with a black suit for this celebration. I was so proud when he told me that, that I told him I would purchase them. When I mentioned this to my dad, he was just as proud and said he would purchase Josh's tie combination. You know I couldn't let this special moment pass by without taking pictures. He and my dad are in both pictures and they are joined by our associate pastor in one of the pictures.

Annual Women's Day

This past June, we celebrated Annual Women's Day at our church. It was a weekend long celebration and this picture was taken on Friday night, just before we went into the Women's Praise and Worship service.

The Great Outdoors

I snapped these pictures of my son while we were waiting to tour the Caverns in San Antonio. I love to capture pictures of Joshua in his element and being out in the great outdoors is certainly his element.

Girly girl cards

I saw this georgous paper at By Design and couldn't wait to create some girly-girl cards with it. I had so much fun with this paper, that I made 2 styles.

Baby on the Move

I picked up some baby patterned paper at By Design and wanted to do a baby layout. I haven't done one of those in a long time, but I had some baby pictures of my son that I wanted to scrap. Scrapping these pictures took me back to twelve years ago and brought lots of smile to my face. Where did the time go?

Joseph turns 1

I have two nephews that turned one this year. Joseph turned one last week and he had a party this weekend. I wanted to make him a special card. I like to see little boys play with trains, so I thought I'd include a train on his card.

100% Original

Is it real or wax. I took these pictures of my sister while visiting a wax museum. I wanted to do a real girlie layout, but need a real "girlie" girl; I think I found the perfect one.

The Handsome Man in my Life

Isn't he just the most handsome "pre-teen" you've ever seen; well I certainly think so. We worked really hard on his Social Studies project in the spring. So, like any good scrapbooker, I had to commemorate the final project with pictures.

More Encouragement

What can I say, I really like black with yellow and grey with yellow. I wanted to make a card for a church member battling cancer, and when I saw this paper in my LSS, knew it would be perfect for the card I had in mind.

Encouraging Words

I wanted to send a note of encouragement to a church member, following a serious car accident. Yellow usually cheers me up, so I thought I would give it a try and add it to this card. What do you think?

The Gangs All Here

I've been so busy making cards lately, that my scrapbooking has begun to pile up, so I thought I'd take a break and do some scrapbooking. I have been wanting to complete the scrapbook for last summer's vacation, so it felt pretty good to get another layout completed.

Scallops Anyone

I'm back with more scallops; can you say "HOT"? I love scalloped cards and making the scallops.

All Ocassion Card

I generally don't like purple, but I think I've grown to love it over the summer. I've seen so many pretty papers in purple or shades of purple; and purple and green, I simply could not resist.

Many Thanks

This is a remake of a card I've done before, but this time I thought I'd add flowers and stagger the sentiment. It looks like a totally different card. Pretty neat, huh?

Dreamsicle

Does this card remind you of a dreamsicle? That's what I thought about when I saw the patterned paper and I knew I had the perfect orange ribbon to match it. This card is going to be included in a boxed set of cards for every ocassion. Enjoy.

Birthday Bash

I was going through a magazine, saw something that caught my eye and thought, they gave me an idea for a card, and here it is. Isn't that funny, how you're looking at something and it inspires your creativity and the color theme. I started thinking that the idea wouldn't come together well with the swirls on the paper, but I was pleased with the outcome. I hope you enjoy it too.

A Heartfelt Thank You

I think this card says it all.

Get Well Soon

Have you ever looked at something so much and didn't see anything, well, I did that with this black and white print, then came up with the perfect idea for it. I decided to make an envelope card and add a sunflower to match the cardstock. I really like the way it turned out; don't you?

Glitz & Glitter for Sisters

My baby sister had her 43rd birthday in July. WOW, my baby sister turning 43 is scary because that means I'm getting older. Anyway, I wanted to do something FABULOUS for her birthday, considering she gave us specific requirements for her cards; did I actually say that and possibly imply that she is a tad bit bossy; umph.... I really enjoyed making her card, but I couldn't afford a gift after making this card, so I was glad she enjoyed it.

Challenge #12

Challenge #12 was to use the notebook from the Fabulous Finds Cricut cartridge. We could make either a card or a journaling notebook; I chose to do a notebook because I buy lots of them. Well, I won't be buying them anymore, I'll just power up my Cricut, and get busy. I don't usually use purple, but I had these beautiful Bazzill Brisbane flowers and I wanted to use them. So, I started with the flowers and worked backwards. Hope you like it.

Sympathy Card

There are always those cards that I don't like to make, well sympathy cards are one of them. I always struggle with what to say on the inside of the card and I spend lots of time putting the colors together to make sure that the cards are uplifting and encouraging. I hope this one was.

Birthday Goes Round

I was going to be on vacation for my mother's birthday, but I couldn't leave without making her card. I wanted to practice with making a round card and figured this was a good ocassion. I like the way it turned out, though in the picture, the flower colors look a little darker than the card. They were actually a perfect match. I told my mom not to open it until her birthday, but I have a feeling she peeked.

Summertime Pinks - More

I liked this paper so much, I decided to use it a couple of more times. I changed the design, just a little each time. Is this Summertime Pink paper CUTE?

Summertime Pinks

I wanted to play with some new fun summer papers I bought, so I made this card. I don't know what I'll do with it yet, but I like the way it turned out. I sure I'll be making this card again, using other papers; what, me scraplift, you better belief it.

My Little Flower

This layout is part of a challenge. The instructions were to create a 12x12 layout, with at least one circle in the background and a famous quote. Well, I had been holding onto these pictures of Josh at the new skate park in downtown Houston; well not quite at the skate park. The skate park was so crowded, that we left after about 1 1/2 hours. As we were walking to the car, we noticed there was a hill heading down to buffalo Bayou, so my son, having an adventurous spirit decided that he would sit on his skateboard and ride it down the hill. As always, my camera just happened to be handy and I caught it all.

Don't know if you can read the quote, but it says "Love is the only flower that grows and blossoms without the aid of seasons". I don't know who said it, but I thought it fit the pictures perfectly and he is certainly my special flower.

I had a great time with this layout, but the challenge was being able to keep it mascline, while adding the flowers and ribbon I love so much.

I hope you enjoy it.

Challenge #10

For this challenge, Velma sent each of us a picture of a lady in black slacks, a black and white polka dot top and a red belt. She told us to use the picture as inspiration for the challenge. Well, first of all let me say how much I love black and white; throw in a splash of red and I'm thrilled. I wasn't sure what I was going to create with all of the black and white paper I've got, but I walked into my favorite scrapbook store, By Design Scrapbook Boutique, as they were unpacking some just-delivered pattern paper and what did I see; black and white polka dot paper. I saw it and thought this is perfect, so I bought a couple of sheets. I wanted to make something fun and festive, so I came up with this cute little purse-card.

I hope you like it because I had a BLAST making it. I was having such a good time with the paper, that I added a matching envelope.
